In this interesting children's story directed by Walter Beck, young Jochen's ethical actions in tracking down the illicit shotgun slaying of a beaver may be credited, in part, to his storybook hero, the fictional Gordon Byk who fights for justice. When Jochen finds the slain beaver in the woods, he brings it in to his schoolteacher as evidence and then takes off to try to track down its killer. But to his surprise, the beavers' home is threatened by a local strip-mining operation, and if the creatures are to survive, they will have to be brought to a more northerly location. As Jochen spends time at a biological station, this news and other information on the beavers are revealed -- and eventually, so is the beaver's young killer. With nature and the beaver and ecology and ethics in featured roles, this is not only an interesting film for children, but a story most parents would approve as well. - Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide
