A silent nine-year-old Czech boy, a survivor of Auschwitz, flees a refugee center in postwar Germany and is found by an American G.I. Ivan Jandl is only czech actor, that won Oscar for role of Karel Malik in this movie. He could not take up the prize, because Oscar is "capitalist" and the communists in Czech Republic wouldn't let him go to the west for it...
