Ecuador 1976. Nine-year old Manuela and her younger brother have to spend the summer with their strict Catholic grandparents. A lot of things are differnt for Manuela, who has grown up with her parent’s communist and atheist views. She finds it difficult to adhere to her grandparents’ conservative rules that she disobeys time after time. Manuela gets to know her grandfather’s mentally ill brother, a man who will play an important role in her liberation.
