Twelve-year-old Alena (Dita Kaplanová) has had to leave the countryside on a blazing hot summer day and come back home to a block of flats on the outskirts of Prague. She spends most of the day on her own, amusing herself daydreaming and imagining, on the blazing hot building roof awaiting the rain. Her mother (Ladislava Kozderková) is at work all day and her friends are still away on holidays. Alena is keen on the actor Budil (Jirí Bartoska) and puts on her best clothes for him each day, running out onto the street carrying her mother's handbag. - IMDb

I do not understand Czech, but the movie seems rather simple to follow. It is basically a slice-of-life revolving around a pre-teen girl who cleans house for her mom, shops for food, cooks dinner, cares for the seeing-eye dog of the neighborhood blind man when he goes to the hospital, and helps the next door neighbor boy when he cuts his hand. But she still has time for herself. When this industrious little girl finds a color photograph of people sunbathing at the sea, she dons a bikini, fills the bath with water, adds some blue food coloring to the water, then holds the photograph with her toes so that she can imagine she is in the sea with the people at the beach. I give this movie a 6 out of 10 - I might give it a higher score if I understood the language. Rating: 6/10 |
