Solange is depressed: she's stopped smiling, she eats little, she says less. She has fainting fits. Her husband Raoul seeks to save her by enlisting Stephane, a stranger, to be her lover. Although he listens to Mozart and has every Pocket Book arranged in alphabetical order, Stephane fails to cheer Solange. She knits. She does housework. Everyone, including their neighbor a vegetable vendor, agrees that she needs a child, yet she fails to get pregnant by either lover. The three take a job running a kids' summer camp where they meet Christian, the precocious 13-year-old son of the local factory manager. It is Christian who restores Solange to laughter. - IMDb

This strange film (supposedly a 'comedy') could never in a million years be made this way in America today, probably nowhere in the world! Its 'plot' (if you could call it that) is about this woman who is sexually frustrated and therefore depressed (one supposed sign is she starts to do a lot of naked knitting, god knows why!?). So her beloved hubby finds her a stranger to serve as her lover (huh??) but that doesn't work too good either, even though she takes turns shagging them both (I can hardly believe I'm writing this rubbish). Later on, by chance a 13 year old boy gets to stay at her home for a while, and guess what, _he_ turns out to be that 'perfect partner' she so much needed & longed for! We find out they start to have a sexual relationship, but somehow in this film not only is that _not_ a bad thing - it's a _good_ thing! (?!?) In the end they run off together, posing as mother & son, she gets a job as maid for some poor old cripple & the last thing we see is that the woman is pregnant - with the _boy's_ child, HELLO!!! Seriously, if this sort of stuff were even _hinted_ at in a film today, it would be ripped to pieces & the director would be lucky to keep his testicles unharmed for more than a week, heh. And to think, it won a 'best foreign film' Oscar!! :D... more |
