This truly unique movie is an intriguing mixture of coming of age themes, political satire and dark humour. Indeed, without the humour, some scenes would appear to be in very bad taste (the torture of the elderly maid, for example). However, the fact that it is so stylishly put together combines with the light hearted elements to make it highly entertaining. There are many iconic 1960s images (cars, clothes, household items etc.) and the director does a fine job of displaying both the innocence of children and their vulnerability to corruption by the adult world - hence the eldest boy is seen walking on a beach, delivering a political speech, naked except for his beloved Nazi helmet. Happily, for non Italian speakers, there are now versions of the film available with English and other subtitles. Rating: 9/10 |
