In a town near Salamanca, an eccentric widower, aged 60, is captivated by an imp, a precocious 13 year old. Alejandro is wealthy and alone, passing time with music, chess, and his shotgun. Gregoria (Goyita) the daughter of a weak-willed policeman and his bullying wife, is a budding naturalist who conspires to meet Alejandro. Even though he knows the village is talking, Alejandro spends time with Goyita, on walks, horseback rides, and dinners. He's enchanted and tells his friend the village priest that he's living for the first time. Goyita makes new demands on Alejandro, and he must decide how to be true to his ethics and to this Platonic yet highly-charged relationship. - IMDb

Among the movies which have as a subject a man-girl relationship, “El nido” is the only one I have seen where the girl is in her early teens and the man in his sixties. The relationship between Goyita (13) and Alejandro (60+) is deeply touching and beautifully described in this movie. There is no sex and not even any physical intimacy in it. Only in one occasion, in the middle of the movie, when Alejandro takes his friend back home, and she is getting out of his car, she asks him if he likes her as a woman, and Don Alejandro, after answering “yes” to her question, tries to kiss her, but Goyita kindly rebuffs him, pretending not to notice it and turning her face on the other side. This is the only moment where the script might have the two main characters indulge to some physical intimacy, but it avoids it, correctly in my opinion. Because the relationship between the girl and the elderly man is mostly a deep soul-to-soul relationship, one where they mutually learn from each other. She teaches him love for nature, he teaches her love for music. Despite being soul-to-soul, though, the relationship is not purely platonic, but full of tenderness and of passion. It is deeply involving for both of them, mainly for Alejandro, who is so much caught by it that his life changes, he ends up following all what she says he should be doing, and eventually brings him to death. But also for Goyita, who has to face the strong opposition to the relationship by her own family, despite she seems to have started it almost as a mischievous child game. The sad ending of impossible loves in the real world is usually the surrender by one or both lovers, and only in fairy tales they can end up with the perpetual happiness of the lovers in a realm which does not belong to this world. The tragic ending of the movie is not realistic, but is not fairy tale-like either. It is the unlikely sad ending of an unlikely romance. For Goyita Alejandro will remain the hero of her life, who will be always with her in the moments when she alone, surrounded by the nature she loves so much, conducts an imaginary orchestra playing the beautiful music that he used to love and they used to listen together.... more |
