Bullied at school and ignored and abused at home by his indifferent mother and older brother, Billy Casper (David Bradley), a 15-year-old working-class Yorkshire boy, tames and trains his pet kestrel falcon whom he names Kes. A great film. Grim, but humourous. David Bradley gives a wonderfully natural performance in this achingly true-to-life movie.

Excellent storyline, as is the case with all of Barry Hines' material. Sadly a significant portion of the book was cut from the film and as such could make parts of the plot harder to understand.

That said, it is a good film and well worth watching, however I'd advise anyone to read the book as well. Look out for the brilliant early performance of TV hard-man Brian Glover.
