Simone, eleven and lost his mother, lives with his father in the Abruzzo countryside in the early eighties. It's summer and, since most of his friends are on holiday, Simone spends time with Lorenza, a girl two years older, and especially with imaginary figures created by his imagination. This imagination, too externalized, forcing his father to close it in the house. Но Симоне мечтает о встрече со Спичечным человеком, о котором ему рассказывала мама и который способен исполнить любое желание. Но мамы больше нет, а вера в Спичечного человека осталась. Поэтому Симоне повсюду оставляет письма Спичечному человеку и подсказки для него, чтобы тот отыскал путь к его дому. Из-за этого все вокруг, даже родной отец, считают мальчика чокнутым.
