Francie and Joe live the usual playful, fantasy filled childhoods of normal boys. However, with a violent, alcoholic father and a manic depressive, suicidal mother the pressure on Francie to grow up are immense. Unfortunately, one tragedy after another, Francie's world sinks deeper and deeper into paranoia (directed mainly against Mrs. Nugent, a nasty neighbor) and fantasy (where he has visions of the Virgin Mary). - IMDb

Отец – алкоголик, мать – не вполне вменяемая женщина, жизнь в трущобах провинциального городка не способствовала личностному росту и духовному самосовершенствованию юной души. Френси все больше и больше погружался в мир своих странных фантазий, пока окончательно не потерялся в них, окончательно «слетев с катушек». Если рассматривать фильм под очень большим киномикроскопом, можно углядеть в этой ленте и яркую сатиру, и даже громкий социальный протест. Но по большому счету, фильм не об этом. Перед нами всего лишь частная история одного сумасшествия, которая хоть и не наводит зрителя на глубокие размышления, но, будучи рассказана ярко и убедительно, заставляет следить за происходящей на экране драмой с неподдельным интересом.
