The praiseworthy reasons behind the plot of this film tend to make it all the more enjoyable. Made in a country that is not renowned for its filmmaking, it sticks its head way above many produced in other countries. Driven by determination and pride, and soon becoming as one with an ancient steam engine, three old men and a ten year old boy daringly rescue this mechanical hero from a selfish and thoughtless idealist, and although the boy has just an important part to play, he is sadly removed from the great adventure two thirds of the way into film, leaving the old men to pit their wits against the feckless authorities. The real star is without doubt the steam engine itself, competently controlled by its four masters; having a wonderful voice of its own, and puffing along like a faithful and kindly monster. The actors have been extremely well chosen for their character roles, and each has his own level of engagingness; and with the constant bickering of the three old men, it makes for an amusing diversion, with the steam engine maintaining its journey regardless of all human involvement. The music is also strangely inspirational: simple in its form, yet blending faultlessly with the dynamics of the film. This is a must for any ‘Age of Steam’ enthusiast, or perhaps someone who can readily empathise with senility and its associated comradeship. ... more Rating: 10/10 |
